Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory

AMS Accelerator Fig.

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), an innovative analytical technique, measures rare atoms at unprecedented levels of sensitivity, revolutionizing the science of radiocarbon dating and accessing new environmental tracers and chronometers. AMS can     study extraterrestrial materials, the earth sciences, the future of the global environment, and the history of mankind. The Shroud of Turin, meteorites from Mars, the crown of Charlemagne, and ancient air trapped in Antarctic ice indicate some of the samples on which AMS has been applied (Picture:  AMS Center, ANSTO Australia).

The science of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) covers areas of interest to other ICTP programmes, including Earth Sciences, Medical Physics and Biophysics.
